Holocaust Memorial Day/BBC DEC appeal

Today as you are probably aware is Holocaust memorial day when the victims of the Nazi's such as Jews, Homosexuals, Roma, the Mentally Ill and the Disabled are remembered.

The Holocaust was without doubt one of the darkest moments of the history of the 20th Century and showed when a community fails to stand up to fascism the results can be terrifying.

Today in 2009 the threat of facism is very real through we do not face German Nazi's we do however face the challenge of the openly racist British National Party who will be fielding candidates in the June Euro elections.

The challenge of preventing BNP candidate from winning a European Parliamentary seat in the East of England is one mainstream politicians should face head on.

More importantly the rise of the BNP shows a failing of the 2 major political parties in the UK and the minor parties like the Lib Dems and Greens.

Politics need to reconnect with the public in ways that it has not before in the UK.

Through the Economics of today are not anything like as grim as in the 1930's the far right is quick to blame unemployment on those from outside the UK.

The BBC were totally right not to broadcast the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Gaza whilst the situation there is pretty bad for the civilians caught up in the conflict the key is to break the Hamas militia who's terrorist activity resulted in Israel undertaking self defence.

Maybe soon we will a DEC appeal for the Taliban who have also suffered as a result of their Terrorism.

  1. The appeal isn't however for the regime, but instead to help get aid to some of the areas of Gaza which have been wiped out by an onslaught, no matter who caused it - and to get the funds to the area, which so desperately needs it, after aid has been stopped for so long.
